Muscovy Duck

Muscovy Ducks are a great dual purpose duck to add to a small farm or homestead and they're not like most domesticated ducks since they did not decend from the Mallard.  Muscovy Ducks differ from most ducks in that they do not quack, but instead made a soft "hissing" sound, they prefer to perch above ground (like a chicken) at night and prefer to lay their eggs above ground in a nesting box as well. 
 
Muscovy hens are average layers of large eggs and they make wonderful mothers, often hatching out large broods of ducklings.  Drakes are double the size of the hens and weigh on average 10-15lbs.  Their meat is 98% fat free and comparable to a sirloin steak, not greasy like most duck or goose meat.
